OMV WireGuard

OMV WireGuard refers to the use of the WireGuard VPN protocol within the OpenMediaVault (OMV) software, typically through the community-developed OMV-Extras WireGuard plugin. This setup provides a secure, encrypted tunnel for remote access to your OpenMediaVault server and its local network resources, allowing you to safely access files and services from anywhere as if you were physically there, using the high-performance, modern security of the WireGuard VPN.

Step 1

Load up your OMV and from your dashboard Head over to System.

Step 2

You can select Plugins from the side bay or from the top right corner.

Step 3

Now Type in Wireguard in the Search bar on the right hand side, and you will see the Plugin wireguard.

Step 4

Select the Wireguard plugin and then press the down arrow to install the plugin.

Step 5

We Just need to hit Confirm and then yes to install the Wireguard plugin.

Step 6

The install is complete and now close the install window. you will notice is says end of file. keep on the lookout for errors when install anything onto OMV for trouble shooting. We are all good with this install.

Under services( Arrow with 1 inside ) Wireguard( Arrow with 2 inside ) is now present, You will see wireguard in the top right corner (Box around it) see below.

Now wireguard is installed its time to create the Tunnel to OMV. Select tunnels.

Now select the Plus (+) Button so we can setup the tunnel and Enable the Tunnel aswell.

Before you do anything Enable tunnel( Arrow with 1 inside ) . Next give the Tunnel a Name( Arrow with 2 inside ), Network adaptor( Arrow with 3 inside ) and the end point( Arrow with 4 inside ) needs tobe your DNS Mine is DUCK DNS. Leave port alone.

Step 11

Click here for DUCK DS , When you Have your Domain (New.Duckdns.org) put this into the END Point Colum.

Advanced there is a Local IP Section put your OMV IP in there like i have.

Always action the Pending Changes my selecting the Tick in the Yellow box and your should have something that looks like this below.

When you select the tick you will be prompted with a Apply Box select yes. to complete the changes.

Now Headover to wireguard dash board

Now its time to Create the Client side of Wireguard, Select clients To Bring up The create section for clients.

Select the + (plus) button To created a new client.

Like the Tunnel remember to enable( Arrow with 1 inside ) the client and Add the tunnel( Arrow with 2 inside ). save is at the bottom of the page.

Select the tick in the top right hand corner to action all pending Changes.

Apply Changes by selecting YES.

Select the client OMV( Arrow with 1 inside ) that we created and select qr code( Arrow with 2 inside )

The client will now have a QR that has been Generated and we are going to use to connect tot he tunnel we have just setup.

it is now time to install Wireguard app on your phone. i have installed the app on my android phone.

Select the wireguard app. after the app has opened select the PLUS (+) Button

Select Scan from QR code. This is the easiest way to set this up.

Give the Tunnel a Name for me i used OMV

Step 26

Select the Tunnel and lets see if its works.

Now try the local IP Number for OMV. The login Screen should come up if we have created the Tunnel Correctly. in my case it worked. i did notice a little lag from the loading up than from my other VPN but that is because we are using a PI to Run this System. in the Future i plan on Replacing my Current server with something a little more Home Made.
